The part everyone else skips
Not a phone's unlock sensor. Not a QR code on a lanyard that gets passed down the line. A USB fingerprint reader on the class desk, and a student who has to be physically present.
Two fingers captured at admission, with a guardian's written consent on file. The image is discarded — only a mathematical template survives.
A small ClassGrid agent runs on the school's Windows machine and speaks to the scanner. The browser talks to it over localhost — no drivers in the web page.
The agent holds an encrypted cache of that school's templates. Matching happens on the desk, in milliseconds, whether or not the internet is up.
Verified events queue offline and settle to the server when the line returns. Every record carries the device, the operator and the match score.
The grid
Not decoration — navigation. Finance is always cyan. Attendance is always green. After a week, staff stop reading the sidebar and start reaching for the colour.
